TURTLE LAKE REFUGE I will intern at Turtle Lake Refuge. Turtle Lake Refuge is a cafe/store that prepares and sells raw vegan food and products. They promote a healthy lifestyle that is not only physically healthy but environmentally healthy. They specifically sell microgreens and other homemade products like chokecherry macaroons and kale chips to cafes and stores. (Nature's Oasis, Fresh Foods...etc) They promote an environmentally positive lifestyle by running their delivery car on vegetable oil and supporting weed plants otherwise destroyed.
My mentor will be Katrina Blair-the owner of Turtle Lake Refuge! She will provide me guidance on the facilitation of Turtle Lake Refuge and hopefully give me insight on healthy eating. After all, she's published a memorable book on micro-greens as well as promoted several healthy philosophies in Durango. (Such as selling bumper stickers that say "Bees Love Weeds".)
My goal is to learn more about the raw vegan lifestyle and environment. With the resources at Turtle Lake, I'm sure I can do this.
My specific project is to learn more about the nutrients and effects physiologically gained by raw veganism. I need to have skills of research and experience in raw vegan food and recipes. I will need time to research this topic through the input of employees and Katrina at Turtle Lake ,Internet, books, and possibly other resources. I'll use my primary resource of Turtle Lake by asking several questions throughout the Internship. Then, I'll research on my own time after a work day.
My obstacles were big in finding an internship. At first, I was aiming for an internship at a neurobiological or medical field. (Specifically in Houston) I searched for days and e-mailed over 12 people but could not find anyone. I received no return e-mails and only one return call. This was disappointing but I had to move on and find something else. Zoe suggested to intern at a place called, "Turtle Lake Refuge" and explained the details. Despite wanting something more medically -related, I was still intrigued due to my other interests- like alternative healthy food and gardening. I dug into more detail and found this to be a promising Internship. I gladly accepted and currently feel very excited to start.
